Opera Synopsis: Il Barbiere di Sivigliacomposed by Gioachino Rossinifollows Count Almaviva’s spirited attempts to win the clever and spirited Rosina, who is jealously guarded by her guardian, Dr. Bartolo, who plans to marry her himself. With the help of the resourceful barber Figaro, Almaviva adopts a series of disguises—first as a drunken soldier, then as a substitute music teacher—to gain access to Rosina and deepen their secret romance. Despite Bartolo’s plots, aided by the scheming Basilio, and a series of comical misunderstandings, Almaviva and Rosina manage to outwit him at every turn. After Bartolo tries to force a hasty marriage by deceiving Rosina, Almaviva reveals his true identity, and with Figaro’s quick thinking—and a well-timed bribe—they secure a notary and marry just moments before Bartolo arrives with soldiers. Realizing he has lost, Bartolo admits defeat as the lovers and Figaro celebrate their triumph.
