Opera Synopsis: Porgy and Bess takes place in the 1920s in Catfish Row, a Black tenement in Charleston, South Carolina, where a community of working-class residents struggles with hardship and hope. After the violent Crown kills Robbins during a dice game, the outcast Bess finds refuge and love with the disabled beggar Porgy, rejecting both Crown’s brutality and the drug-dealer Sportin’ Life’s temptations. During a church picnic, Crown finds Bess and forces her to stay with him, leaving her ill and tormented when she returns. A hurricane devastates the town, killing several, including Crown—whom Porgy later kills when he returns to claim Bess. Arrested and taken away to identify Crown’s body, Porgy is gone long enough for Sportin’ Life to manipulate Bess into fleeing with him to New York. When Porgy is released and learns she has left, he sets out to find her, determined to reunite with the woman he loves.
